LOCAL APPRENTICE MAKES THE CUT

A local apprentice has joined the elite, having been commended at the prestigious national Young Builder of the Year awards 2010, which took place in London on Wednesday (20/10).
Wayne Pellow (19, from Nelson), left home at an early age and, through his own strength of character, has overcome numerous personal challenges, and now has a bright future ahead of him.
Wayne was unemployed and struggling to find work but, thanks to Lancashire Housing Partnership’s “Building Foundations” pre-employment programme, became a joinery modern apprentice with Thornton Contractors in 2008.
Wayne is one of 32 trainees that have benefitted from the scheme, which provides a range of construction skills, through Calico Enterprises, to help people secure a long-term future in the industry.
Moving forward, Wayne provides a role model for future trainees, a further 32 to be recruited in the next 12 months.
As Wayne looks to the future, he recognises the support he has received:
“Since joining Building Foundations my life has just got better and better. It’s given me everything – the house I live in now, and a career that has given me confidence in myself that I will succeed.
“I've taken responsibility for my life with the support provided. I have a career and a future that will lead on to bigger and better things.
“My ambition now is to be a contracts manager or possibly go into teaching and pass on my skills to others.”
